A Closer Look at What Amblyopia Is

Amblyopia is a visual condition characterized by reduced visual acuity in one eye that cannot be corrected to 20/20 vision with glasses or contact lenses. This reduction in vision occurs because the brain chooses to ignore or suppress the visual input from the affected eye, leading to significant differences in vision quality between the two eyes.

Amblyopia is the leading cause of visual impairment in children, affecting about 2 to 3 out of every 100, with the National Institute of Health identifying it as the most prevalent cause of visual impairment among this demographic.

The Two Types of Amblyopia

There are two primary types of amblyopia, each stemming from different underlying issues:

  1. Refractive Amblyopia: This form arises when there's a difference in refractive errors between the eyes, causing one eye to see a blurred image while the other sees clearly. The brain, favoring clear vision, tends to rely on the image from the sharper eye and disregards the blurry one from the amblyopic eye. Over time, this preference weakens the visual capabilities of the amblyopic eye, affecting vision clarity and impairing other visual functions.
  2. Strabismic Amblyopia: The second form occurs in the presence of strabismus, a condition where the eyes are misaligned (such as turning inward or outward). This misalignment disrupts the eyes' ability to focus on the same point simultaneously, confusing the brain and leading to potential double vision. To avoid this, the brain may ignore the image from the misaligned eye, causing the amblyopic condition.

How New Horizons Vision Therapy Center Treats Amblyopia

We embrace the latest research indicating that amblyopia can be treated at any age. Our approach transcends traditional methods, focusing on binocular vision and biofeedback techniques to foster a comprehensive rehabilitation process. Recognizing amblyopia as a multifaceted visual and neurological issue, our treatments aim to enhance the brain's ability to synchronize and process visual information from both eyes.

Our treatment strategy is rooted in the understanding that amblyopia affects various visual skills. Impairments in focusing, eye tracking, eye-hand coordination, eye teaming, and depth perception are all addressed through our tailored programs.

Correcting Amblyopia With Shaw Lenses

Shaw lenses are a revolutionary type of eyeglass lens that addresses binocular vision problems, including amblyopia and aniseikonia (a condition where there is a significant difference in the perceived size of images seen by each eye). These issues often lead to difficulties achieving comfortable and effective binocular vision, where both eyes work together seamlessly.

How Shaw Lenses Work

  1. Image Size Correction: One of the key benefits of these lenses is their ability to correct the perceived size difference between images seen by each eye. Traditional lenses do not address this discrepancy, which can leave patients struggling with eye strain, headaches, and difficulties in visual processing.

  2. Reduced Strain and Improved Comfort: By harmonizing the visual input from both eyes, Shaw lenses significantly reduce the visual strain typically associated with binocular vision issues.

  3. Enhanced Binocular Vision: By correcting the underlying optical issues that disrupt binocular vision, these lenses help patients achieve better depth perception, improved visual acuity, and more comfortable and effective use of both eyes.

  4. Personalized Optical Solution: Shaw lenses are custom-designed for each patient based on detailed measurements and assessments of their visual system.
